To get a greater variety of examples of face-to-face contact involving self-disclosure, I have observed three different scenarios. The first scenario I viewed was Paige at work. Paige is a bartender at a popular bar/restaurant in downtown Athens. Paige worked this past Thursday night from 7 pm- 12 midnight. Within this five hour period of work, she only had two different encounters/scenarios with men.
- At the beginning of the night, as pictured to the left, this man never revealed his name but told paige that he thought she was very pretty.
-Towards the end of Paige's shift, another man tipped her $20 but never spoke with her or told her his name. No communication was ever made, except when he ordered drinks and then visibly left her the tip in the tip jar.
The next scenario took place at Boar's Head Bar in downtown Athens on a Monday night. Monday nights are particularly slower nights when it comes to people going out (which is why we chose to go out). We predicted that we might have more meaningful conversations on a Monday because there are less people out and bars have less noise. Our predictions were correct because we actually met a kind man named Todd. My roommates and I were sitting outside at a table when Todd approached us and asked for our names. We all talked for approximately ten minutes. Todd disclosed to us that he is a philosophy major at UGA and that he had no idea what he wanted to do after college. He is also planning on studying abroad in Austria this summer and then interning in Atlanta. Because Todd had predicted Louisville to win the NCAA tournament, he had extra cash to spend which was his reasoning for being out on a monday night. Todd was our only encounter for the evening.
The final scenario I used for my experiment took place on a Saturday night. This night surprised me the most because self-disclosure from men was almost nothing. Pictured to the right is the two men we met at Cutters Bar. They told us their names were Dylan and Scott and then proceeded to buy us drinks. I asked them to take a picture with us and then they disappeared.
We finished the evening at Magnolias. This bar had the most men and the most potential for deep conversations, but none happened. However, one girl approached me and asked me if I could do her a favor. I asked her what it was and she responded with, "My friend over there thinks you are the most beautiful girl in the world, will you go talk to him?" i told her, "If he wants to talk to me he can come over here himself." She laughed and walked away and we decided to call it a night.
